Do you need an emergency dentist? You can count on us here at Beverley Dental. Dental injuries can happen anytime, anywhere. If this happens, you need immediate dental care. It is important to immediately alleviate the pain you are enduring and then figure out the best course of action to ensure you remain free of pain.
Whether the injury is minimal or serious, visible or undetectable, as long as there is damage, it can still affect the teeth’s living tissues. Quick treatments help save your injured or damaged teeth, as well as the damaged nerves or blood vessels. If you have a knocked out or broken tooth, don’t ignore the pain, as it will only increase your risk of getting an infection.
How to Handle a Dental Emergency
What should you do if you or your loved one has a dental injury? We have listed the dental first aid for three common types of injuries in the mouth we usually deal with here at Beverley Dental.
Toothache:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water. You may also mix in one teaspoon of salt in an 8-ounce glass of water.
- Take some pain reliever such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. DO NOT use aspirin. Aspirins are an anti-coagulant and could possibly make the bleeding worse.
- Avoid applying pain medication directly to the offending tooth or the gum area as this can burn the tissues.
- If the pain persists, see your dentist as soon as possible.
Knocked Out Tooth:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown only without touching the roots. The tooth can’t be allowed to dry out because dry cells are dead cells. Keeping your tooth moist is also keeping it alive.
- Clean the tooth by rinsing it with milk. You may use tap water but preferably for less than two seconds only.
- Store the tooth in a milk or mild saline solution or place it into a clean container with a small amount of milk or saliva until you can get medical treatment.
- You can also insert the tooth back to its previous position. To keep it place, slowly bite down on a piece of cloth, tissue, foil or mouth guard.
- The most crucial step is to get a professional help immediately. The sooner you see a dentist the more likely the damaged tooth will survive.
Cracked, Chipped, and Broken Tooth
- Collect any fragments of the fractured tooth.
- Use tweezers or some other type of clean instrument to handle the tooth. Fingers tend to be relatively dirty so touch the fragment or tooth as little as possible.
- Keep the tooth fragment clean by doing simple basic cleaning. Rinse the tooth or the fragment in a very clean solution.
- Carry the fragments in milk to your dentist. Go to the dentist as soon as you can to maximise the chances of getting the most appropriate dental outcome. Your dentist may re-attach the fragments to the broken tooth if possible.
Other Dental Emergencies
Other dental injuries that cause people to seek immediate dental treatment are incidences such as something stuck between the teeth, a bitten lip or tongue, an impacted wisdom teeth or broken jaw, chewing something hard, burns from hot foods or drinks or any form of injuries that can be brought about by unexpected trauma.
The basics are easy to follow and the same: Keep any tooth fragments if possible. Protect and prevent further harm. Keep the affected tooth and area clean and sterile. In times of emergency, stay calm but be quick. Don’t waste time and go to your dental professional.
