Senior Oral Health: Why they are at higher risk for cavities?

Older adults need to focus on preventing the development of cavities. A study revealed that seniors are at higher risk of cavities compared to younger people. As you age, your teeth can easily wear away, gums will gradually recede and expose the root surfaces, and there will be a loss of the bone around teeth. All of these are signs that your mouth is aging in conjunction with your body.

With early prevention and detection of oral health problems, anyone can avoid the consequences of cavities and gum disease, and achieve a higher quality of life through excellent oral health.

The Risk Factors of Cavities in Seniors

Here are reasons why elderly teeth are more prone to dental cavities:

  • Inadequate Fluoride – Seniors drinking filtered bottled water, which may lack fluoride, may not be getting enough fluoride. Fluoride reinforces teeth and helps prevent decay.
  • Gum Disease – approximately 95% of the elderly suffer from gum disease. Exposed tooth root is also prevalent among seniors.
  • Dry Mouth – this condition is often an adverse effect of certain medications or medical conditions usually linked to older adults. Saliva is important in washing away food particles while neutralising the acid that promotes tooth decay. A dry mouth is at greater risk for cavities.
  • Arthritis – seniors who have arthritis or other health problems may find it difficult to grip a floss or toothbrush, which makes it hard to practice daily at-home oral care.
  • Assisted Living – Though assisted living is helpful in some ways, the oral hygiene of seniors might be compromised. Lack of individual attention may only prevent seniors from keeping their teeth clean and healthy.
  • Finances – Some older adults are not capable of buying dental products or visiting their dentist for professional dental maintenance due to a fixed income.

  • Brush and floss the natural or replacement teeth at least two times a day
