Gingivitis – The Early Stage of Gum Disease

Are you seeing a pink or red substance mixing with your toothbrush when you brush your teeth? You could be suffering from gingivitis and you may not just know or feel it until you visit your dentist for a consultation. Gingivitis is one of two forms of gum disease and the mildest form of this condition.

Gum disease is a prevalent dental condition affecting millions of people worldwide. It is an inflammation and infection that damages the tissue supporting your teeth. As a matter of fact, one of the reasons you should clean and brush your teeth completely is to prevent gingivitis including the serious type of gum disease called periodontitis.

Causes of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is caused by nothing else but plaque, a sticky film made up of mainly bacteria that accumulates on your teeth, particularly in fissures and spaces or around broken fillings. The harmful bacteria yield substances that have the ability to damage the gums. If not eliminated, plaque hardens into a deposit known as calculus, also called as tartar. Calculus aggravates the gums, giving more surfaces for the growth of bacteria.

People who are highly at risk of gingivitis and gum disease are individuals with poorly controlled diabetes as well as pregnant women. This also includes those who are taking systemic steroids or oral contraceptives. There are certain medications that can also trigger gingival overgrowth and inflammation.

Signs that you have Gingivitis

Detecting the symptoms of gingivitis can be a bit difficult. In the early stages of gum disease, there may not be any indications to tell you something is off. Signs and symptoms of gingivitis are more likely to include:

  • Gums are soft, swollen and red
  • Bleeding gums
  • Mouth sores
  • Colour of gums changes from pink to dark red
  • Shiny appearance to gums

If you have experienced the abovementioned symptoms, it is time to visit your dentist. Treating the gingivitis early can inhibit the disease in its tracks.

Fighting Gingivitis

Here are the simple five ways to fight gingivitis and to uphold good oral health:

  • Brush twice and floss once daily
  • Inspect your gums often. If you’ve noticed any indications of gingivitis, report them to your dentist immediately.
  • Visit your dentist for routine dental checkups and cleaning to keep your mouth and teeth clean overall.
  • Eat more healthy foods and be wary of the unhealthy ones, especially the foods that are bad for your teeth.
  • Avoid smoking. If you are into the habit, it’s best to quit right away.
